SSM Mountain Song
(Clarion of Quietude x Reeds Fancy
Lady)
1995 Bay Mare
Mountain Song has a balanced pedigree of Brunk, Old Vermont, Western
Working Family and Government. Her sire, Clarion, brings the Jubilee King sire line along
with another cross to Jubilee King through his dam. The rest of his pedigree is some of
the best of the Old Vermont Morgans.
Mountain Songs dam Reeds Fancy Lady was a lovely, correct, generous,
even-tempered mare, and it was a tragic loss that she died of a mystery enteritis so
young. Fancy Lady truly lived up to her name, being both fancy and a lady. Her sire was
Reeds Gallant Hawk, sired by that speedy road horse, Gallant King. Gallant King was
an upstanding, tall, well-put together Morgan and a good sire of quality. Owned and loved
by Everett Reed of Colorado, he was bred by Stuart Hazard of Funquest Morgans in Kansas.
Gallant King was by Flyhawk and out of Neliza, that excellent broodmare daughter of
Jubilee King. Nelizas dam, Nella, was another excellent producer who was sired by
Allen King, full brother to Jubilee Kings sire, Penrod. Neliza and Nella, between
them produced many an excellent breeding Morgan. It is interesting to note that
Flyhawks dam, Florette, was also by Allen King and out of a Knox Morgan mare, giving
Florette the same Lambert and Knox based blood as Jubilee King.
Reeds Gallant Star, a handsome correct stallion, was out of the
hauntingly lovely Cornwallis Pat, she by Colonels Boy, by Cornwallis. Cornwallis is
considered to be mostly the Old Vermont blood, although his sire Sealect was out of a Knox
Morgan daughter, and Sealect has a cross back to Daniel Lambert. Colonels Boys
dam, Gill, was by the Government Mansfield and out of a mare, Sentinel Lass, by Sampson.
Sampson was also by Knox Morgan and his dam goes back to Daniel Lambert and Black Hawk.
Sentinel Lasss dam was by General Gates and out of a mare by Gillig, who goes back
to Daniel Lambert. This parallels J. C. Brunks breeding, using the Old Vermont
blood, Knox Morgan, and Daniel Lambert. Colonels Boy went west to the Chilocco
Indian School of Oklahoma where he sired many good Morgans and an untold number of grade
horses.
Cornwallis Pat was out of the prolific mare (15 produce) Lady Patch who
was Western Working Family, being by Colonel Patch (Querido x Headlight Morgan daughter)
and out of Jane L, by Linsley and out of Jannace by Sparhawk and out of a Headlight Morgan
mare. That is Roland Hill on the top and Elmer Brown on the bottomtwo foundation
breeders of the Western Working Family.
The dam of Fancy Lady, Yola, was a double Cornwallis granddaughter. Yola
was a fancy, correct, pretty mare who passed on many good traits to her foals. Her sire
was the Lippitt Allens Major, that beautiful, baroque, typey, correct, mischievous
& smart fellow. The dam of Allens Major was of pure old Vermont breeding.
Cornwallis passed on to his get a certain upheadness and spark of excitement while
remaining very tractable and sensible. Yolas dam, Seneca Lady, was out of Indian
Maid who was sired by the Government Monterey and was out of Gill.
Fancy Ladys pedigree has a nice balance of Brunk, Old Vermont and
Western Working Family. Bred to Clarion, the Brunk becomes more emphasized in SSM Mountain
Song.
