This 15 hand, solid mare comes from pure Western Working Family stock. Her
sire line goes back to the large and stout Romanesque. Her pedigree carries some of the
best of the Old California, Kansas and Sellman breeding with some good Brunk horses behind
it all.
Her sire, Vining Lamar, was a working horse sired by El Spartez, he by El
Cortez, by Romanesque. El Spartez was out of Princess Spar by Sparbeau by Linsley. There
is also Linsley behind the dam of El Cortez. The dam of Princess Spar was out of a Roland
Hill bred mare, Princess Allan, who was by Querido and out of a Sellman mare. The dam of
Vining Lamar was Washington bred and by Shawalla Buck, that solid correct but not
especially typey stallion who was a grandson of Sparbeau. Shawalla Buck's dam was by
Tehachapi Allan and out of Delight L. Tehachapi Allan was a full brother to Princess
Allan; he sired 87 registered Morgans and was upheaded, correct and a good sire. Delight L
was sired by Linsley and her dam had common ancestors to the other Elmer Brown bred horses
in the pedigree, such as Sparbeau, the dam of El Cortez, and others. Memphis Belle was the
paternal granddam of Shawalla Buck. She was sired by the very good Blackman, son of the
upheaded, correct, working ranch horse and sire Redman. Blackman's dam was the Brunk
Gojea. Memphis Belle's dam, Belle McClure was double Linsley being by a grandson of
Linsley and out of a daughter of Linsley. Her sire was sired by Romanesque. She was
another of the grand mares bred by Elmer Brown of Kansas. The second dam of Vining Lamar
was Shawalla Kitty, she by Silver Rockwood and out of Nespelem Betty. Silver Rockwood was
by the Brunk Agazizz, grandson of Jubilee King and Liza Jane. Silver Rockwood was a lovely
flaxen chestnut who sired 82 registered get. Silver Rockwood's dam May Rockwood, was by
the Government Rockwood (Bennington x Carolyn-Old Vermont lines) and out of another Elmer
Brown mare. Nespelem Betty was a product of one of the Indian School breeding programs as
was her sire, Chilocco Star, who was bred at the Chilocco School in Oklahoma. He was a
product of some close breeding being by Silver Ranger and out of a Silver Ranger daughter.
Silver Ranger was California bred, by Querido and out of a Sellman mare. The dam of
Nespelem Betty brings in a little different lines, being bred in Montana. She was by the
Sellman bred Rosin, by Red Oak (also the sire of Romanesque) and out of a mare by De
Jarnette Jr.
The dam of Maullie Brown was Bluehill Chloe, an Oregon bred mare by
Sparfield Condor by Sparfield by Lee Spar by Dude Spar, by Sparbeau. Dude Spar was out of
a Roland Hill bred mare by Querido and out of a Sellman mare. Sparfield's dam was also by
Dude Spar. This double cross to Sparbeau helped to give Sparfield his breeding strength.
The dam of Lee Spar was a Roland Hill mare, sired by Sonfield and out of a mare by Querido
and whose dam was by the good Brunk stallion Pat Allen, and out of a Sellman mare. The
second dam of Sparfield was also by Sonfield and out of a mare by Joaquin Morgan who was
by Romanesque and out of a Linsley mare, another Elmer Brown mare. Joaquin Morgan was
statuesque, upheaded, correct and handsome. The dam of Sparfield Condor was Beaver State
Gem sired by Hedlites Micky Waer and out of Beaver State Trinket. Hedlites Micky Waer has
a wonderful pedigree of Old California, Brunk, Elmer Brown and Sellman. Many of his
ancestors were excellent sires in their own right and the mares were often excellent
producers. His sire line goes back to Romanesque through Monte L to Major RM (who was out
of a Linsley granddaughter and yet another of those good Elmer Brown mares). The dam of
Monte L was Jumina, a daughter of Jubilee King and her dam being by Allen King, brother to
Jubilee King's sire. The paternal granddam of Micky Waer was a Brunk bred by Flyhawk and
out of Juzan, the son of Jubilee King and Liza Jane. The granddam of Micky Waer's paternal
granddam was Sentola, the full sister to Jubilee King. The dam of Hedlites Micky Waer,
Hedlites Kitty Clover, was by Hedlites Bob E A, a son of Hedlite by the Sellman bred
Blackhaux who came to California early in the last century. Bob E A's dam, Piedmont
Cresta, a Hearst bred mare, was by Mountcrest Sellman, that excellent sire and grand
Morgan. Kitty Clover was another product of close breeding as her dam Piedmont Cresta was
the dam of her sire, thus giving her another cross to the grand Mountcrest Sellman and the
excellent Sellman mares.
Beaver State Trinket, dam of Beaver State Gem who was the dam of Sparfield
Condor, has another intense pedigree. Trinket's sire was by Sparfield, giving yet another
cross to this good stallion. Trinket's sire's dam, Kilynn Vonmac, was by Hilin, son of
Blackman (giving another cross to this fine stallion) and out of one of the Ayr mares,
bred in Colorado and tracing back to Romensque twice. Kilynn Vonmac's dam was a Skagit
bred mare and was a double granddaughter of Highwood L, a son of the little used Lobo who
was a double grandson of Jubilee King, and pure Brunk breeding. Beaver State Trinket's
dam, Tripenny, was by Trinango, bred by the Brunk family and having a good Brunk pedigree.
Tripenny's dam was by Gay Mac and out of a California bred mare. Again, there are many
good progenitors behind Trinket.Diamond Josie was the dam of Bluehill Chloe. Josie was by
Diamond Duke, a son of Shawalla Buck, bringing another dose of the good blood behind Buck.
Duke's dam was by the Government Abbott and his dam Midze was Brunk breeding, by
McAllister by Jubilee King, bringing some excellent old Brunk blood. The dam of Diamond
Josie was Knox Ann, by Linns Knox by Dapper Dan, he of pure old California breeding. Linns
Knox was by Brown Knox Lu, a daughter of Brown Knox, a son of Senator Knox. This is one of
the few existing lines to Senator Knox that does not go through his son Senator Graham.
Brown Knox was out of another Elmer Brown mare, by Romanesque and out of a Linsley
daughter. Brown Knox Lu was out of a Sellman mare. Finally, Knox Ann was out of Sondawn, a
daughter of Linden Sonfield, by Sonfield and out of a Querido daughter. Sondawn's dam was
a Sellman mare also.
Maullie Brown has a very valuable pedigree of some of the best of the old
breeding. Her ancestors are mostly stallions and mares who were proven sires and dams,
often founding their own families. Her valuable sire line back to Romanesque is reinforced
by the many times that he is found elsewhere in the pedigree. The frequent Brunk horses
behind her help to bring beauty and type. Overall, this is a rare pedigree of great
strength for breeding.
